VikingThe Viking program is a result of the Mariner program success. Viking 1 and 2 where the first US mission to land a lander on the surface of mars and send pictures back. The landers discovered that due to the conditions of Mars, that Martian soil self sanitizes, allowing no organism to survive.

MarinerThe mariner program was an overall success, with all ten probes gathering information about the martian planet. Mariner 4 showed that some flexibility int he mission plan allowed for better success in missions. Mariner 9's findings brought up the possibility of life on mars and paved the way for the Viking program.
